BRIKEN run 52
System checks passed.
7:09 PPACs are discharging very frequently.
7:39 counted 8 discharges. It's about once in four minutes. An acceptable discharge rate is several times in
one shift.
Firstly, each discharge damages the PPAC. Even 10 to 20 discharges can easily cause dead regions of cm size.
Secondly, with the frequency of discharge, we are now missing like as much as 25% of all events (at least
at a given PPAC)
As the detector becomes more damaged, it can discharge more frequently.
Moving the detector's position slightly can help to alleviate the problem by putting the beam on a fresh region
Anyway, as for a parasitic run they can do whatever they want, but it seems they are mis-operating the PPACs
Basically the voltage is too high or the detector is too old and needs to be replaced.

Thu Mar 30 16:12:21 2017 |
DK, OH, CG | Friday, March 31 run status | 00:11 BigRIPS has started a new run at 00:10:42 run 0165.
AIDA subrun R16_357 was about halfway (~1 GB) at 00:11.
BRIKEN run 21 ( so-called 170331_0012_Mg40 )
Check clock status: FEE64 module nnaida1 global clocks failed, 6 [ as usual, and it is set to ch 2 ]
ADC calib all pass
Clock timestamp, passed
Sync counter error, passed
Sync pulses all consistently near 3 x 10^7
Memory info from Linux FEE64 all around 35k to < 40k
Sync check on the BRIKEN terminal is looking all consistent to me.
Temperatures are seen as attachment 1, temps_31_a.png
Biases and leak currents seen as attachment 2, bias_31_a.png
As for what I've checked then we continue on in what appears to be a stable condition.
01:12 I can see BigRIPS team at their DAQ PC about to change the run.
2017-03-31 01:12:24 BigRIPS run 0166 starts
AIDA subrun R16_372 is 75% finished at 1:12
BRIKEN run 22, [ 170331_0114_Mg40 ] -- timestamp beginning at 1:14 means they are almost exactly at the
beginning of AIDA R16_373
Check clock status, ibid to above
Check ADC calib, ibid
Check ASIC clock timestamp, ibid
Check sync errors, ibid
Check sync pulses, 3.2 x 10^7 consistently
Check FEE64 memory, 36k to 37k.
Sync check at BRIKEN is still running and shows the clocks are lined up.
Continue.
02:10 BigRIPS begins a new run, number 0167
AIDA subrun R16_386 finished at 2:10, so BigRIPS 0167 should correspond nicely with the start of AIDA R16_387
BRIKEN run number 23 [ 170331_0214_Mg40 ]
All six (6) system wide checks were performed. The situation remains stable as above.
03:13 BigRIPS starts a new run at 3:12:51
AIDA R16_402 is about 50% complete at 3:13
BRIKEN 24 [ 170331_0314_Mg40 ]
All system-wide checks are passed. Number of sync pulses is ~3.7 x 10^7
03:33 Bored so here's some spectra, attachment 3 as pulses_31_b.png. It looks good.
04:10 BigRIPS run 0169 began at 2017-03-31 04:09:50
AIDA is R16_416 50% though at this time.
BRIKEN 25 [ 170331_0413_Mg40 ]
All checks passed. I'm not just writing it, but they were performed :)
See attachment 4 for bias. had screencapped temp but forgot to update so it was just a clone of attachment 1 (this
was noticed at 8:07)
04:58 Beam operators called. They stopped the beam so they can exchange the carbon stripper foil.
AIDA R16_428 was 25% through at 4:58.
05:02 R16_429 is at 600 MB I hear the chime to indicate the beam is back
BigRIPS 2017-03-31 05:02:57 run 0170 is started
BRIKEN run 27 [ 170331_0504_Mg40 ] -- NB: Run 26 was junk (some mistake)
All six (6) system wide checks are a go. 3.7 x 10^7 is the sync pulse count.
Continue.
05:12 I show you the AIDA look good in attachment 5 spec_31_c.png
06:10 still waiting on BigRIPS to notice what time it is.
06:14 BRIKEN sends the resync. (this note is written at 7:11..see below)
06:16 R16_447 Jorge realizes there are no neutrons in BRIKEN, and we realize the second beam physicist is on the phone.
06:29 Beam physicists hang up the phone...2017-03-31 06:29:30 BigRIPS run 0171
AIDA run R16_451 is almost exactly beginning at 6:29
BRIKEN run number 28
The system wide checks are consistent as before
FEE64 module nnaida1 global clocks failed, 6
Check sync pulses sees 3.9 x 10^7
06:36 - I asked the BigRIPS team the situation. Basically, they calibrate the faraday cup and also three plastic
scints near F0 (primary target) for calibrartion (cross section estimation) purposes.
So it seems in this time THEY have the beam yet we do not because it is not reaching all the way to F11 the
entire time.
Though I do not want to bother the operators with too many questions, it can be that parts of BigRIPS run 0170
near the end will not correlate with our data.
07:11 - I had not caught that BRIKEN sent the resync. It was confirmed that it was the only resync issued tonight.
Please see the attachment 6 "spec_31_d.png", though I'm not sure it would be useful
07:47 Not sure the situation. Beam physicists were near their DAQ PC for a bit, then on the phone, but their run has not
restart.
AIDA run R16_469 at this time, just to note.
07:57 2017-03-31 07:55:33 BigRIPS run 0177 is started. Evidently run 0176 is skipped somehow.
AIDA R16_471 was at 1.9 GB at 7:57 so probably it mostly correlates with the start of the BigRIPS run.
BRIKEN run number 29 (?) [ 170331_0758_Mg40 ]
[8:15 - confirmed the problem with beam physicists was a DAQ issue. Thus BigRIPS run 0172 is junk, and they took
some time to resolve their issue.]
System-wide checks look normal. 4 x 10^7 sync pulses
Attachments 7 and 8 have bias and temp ("bias_31_e.png" and "temp_31_e.png")
08:07 When doing the temperature this time, I realized that an early temperature "temp_31_b" was just a clone of
"temp_31_a" as I forgot to refresh. Now the attachment numbering changes as I delete it, and the elog is updated to
correctly reflect the new ordering. I should be more careful.

DK | cshrc hacking w/ MIDAS | The ~/.cshrc was modified to change the MIDAS path for a convenient analysis method, but it should be done in a shell script instead, as it pushes the MIDAS BASE to all instances
of MIDAS, such as the Run Control, etc.
As we did not want to log out, and the X session is setting these globally somehow (unexpected) then I did a temporary hack.
The directory we did not want, MIDAS@aidas.240215 was moved to MIDAS@aidas.240215.hacking
Then a symbolic link called MIDAS@aidas.240215 was created to point at MIDAS@aidas
We should remember to undo this later and fix the situation. |

OH, DK, CG | First beam runs | For BigRIPS run numbers, they are available online: http://bripscnt01.rarfadv.riken.jp/runsum/index.php
21:30 AIDA and BRIKEN are ready to go -- so we closed the door and asked the BigRIPS team to send the beam to
F11. It will take about 30 minutes as they want to recalibrate one of the Faraday cups.
22:09: Beam is coming to F11. AIDA sub-run R13_17 is running at 22:10 so nearly the same time.
BigRIPS run number 0140
BRIKEN file name 170329_2213_40Mg Run 0. It is started at 22:13. R13_18 for AIDA
See attachment 1 for biases.
23:12: We notice that BigRIPS began the run 0141 at 23:08
AIDA subrun R13_36 began about or near 23:07 or 23:08
BRIKEN run number 170329_2313_40Mg Run 1
All system-wide checks passed (excepting nnaida6 clock status which is a known issue)
Statistics rates look reasonable, except that the nnaida 16 23 24 are even higher than before when the beam
was off (~200k)
23:59 - AIDA crashed. Merger stopped. When attempting to stop the run, the following error is displayed:
STATE for nnaida1 returned with an error
error: SOAP http transport timed out after 20000 ms

error: SOAP http transport timed out after 20000 ms

We kill off the merge and tape server.
DAQ itself comes back after a reset. Attempting to open the tape service, however, yields an error
Cannot issue more Access Tokens
ClaimTapeServer returned:-

30.3.2017
0:56 When attempting to bring AIDA back up, eventually nnaida10 was not showing merger data before enabling the
ASIC readout data. On the run control, nnaida10 consistently showed that its data transfer was not enabled.
Attempting to reset etc., then eventually issuing Go would drop all the data transfers.
After a power cycle by the standard method, essentially the problem persists, except that it is nnaida 7 8 9 10
(the whole block) which shows the problem where we cannot get the enabled data transfer to stick. |

DK, PV, JL, CG | Degrader, Pb wall opening | 16:21
Chris noticed that when the degraders that are at the beam right position when they are "out" may not be fully removed from the beamline. It's difficult to make a good
measurement, but it looks like several cm (~3 cm?).
The degrader that moves out to the beam left side has its inner-most edge roughly flush with the square opening of the polyethylene wall.
It does not seem that the issue is about the slider's center position. This we checked yesterday and within the judgement of our eyes and limited viewing angle, several people
independently confirmed that the center of the degrader slider is near the true center of BRIKEN and AIDA with respect to the beam axis. It appears to be an issue of the
slider's total track length. Also it should be noted that the degraders are installed in a somewhat asymmetric way, so the consideration of one opening side of the degraders
when fully open and another isn't fully out may not be germane.
16:44
We shifted the center of the degrader slider to be about less 1 cm to the beam right. So now the degraders a bit more symmetric as far as their inner edges are related to the
opening in the polyethylene wall.
As for the Pb wall, its opening is ~10.5 cm. The "window" in the Pb wall is slightly shifted to the beam left side. The left side is ~5.5 cm from the center, where as the right
side is <5.5 cm from the center. |

TD | Report - medium - delayed or missing authenticated mount requests following FEE64 power cycle | This is not, I think, a new observation.
Following FEE64 power cycles we sometimes observe delayed ( ~5-15 minutes ) authenticated mount requests
as the FEE64s mount their root filesystem from the AIDA server aidas1 - see attachment 1.
There also appears to be an instance of a *missing* authenticated mount request - nnaida10 at 19.51
So this is *a* (but probably not *the*) cause of FEE64 timeouts observed following a FEE64 power cycle
and then waiting 10 minutes before attempting to start the MIDAS DAQ.
I have noticed that these issues appear to be significantly worse when we are using NTFS-mounted USB disks
to backup data from the AIDA server internal disks. Indeed, performance in general is noticeably slower when
using the NTFS-mounted USB disks.
Currently, we attempt to mitigate these issues by either throttling rsync or nice'ing cp. |

DK, TD, JA | Clock settings at the waveform generator stage | Clock settings for this experiment are slightly different than in the previous case.
Below are strictly the settings for the waveform generator itself.
Sent to AIDA side: 0 to 5 V amplitude, 50 MHz frequency
Sent to BRIKEN side: 0 to 5 V amplitude, 25 MHz frequency
Thus, both teams are taking TTL-type signals. However, the BRIKEN one goes to the Philips module which essentially converts it straight away to NIM.
There may have been a slight misunderstanding yesterday about the setup, but finally the waveform signal going to BRIKEN was checked and there was no problem. So we don't make
any changes (e.g. changing the waveform generator to a NIM-type output). |

CG, OH | Sunday 26th March | 10.30 Left DAQ running overnight to look for alphas in DSSDs.
DSSD bias still ok @ 23.3oC (see att. 1).
FEE temps ok.
Slow and fast comparator thresholds set to 0x60 (~1Mev).
No obvious alphas (see att. 2+3).
11.00 Looked at waveforms and see long ripple (period ~10us) in a lot of the FEEs, e.g. nnaida15 in attachment 4. |

CG, OH | Thursday 23rd March - DSSD replacement + move | 10.00 Investigating DSSD2 (MSL BB18-1000 3058-9) missing channels, found broken bond wires on rear side (~1/4).
Replaced with 3058-3.
Stack order now:

beam | 3058-3
| 2998-23
| 3058-5
| 3058-6
V 3058-7
12.00 All detectors, including the new replacement bias correctly (see att. 1).
14.00 Shunji has mentioned moving AIDA+BRIKEN forward by ~1m due to concerns about focusing the accurately at such a rearward position.
The afternoon was spent removing the EURICA rails to enable the push forward of AIDA+BRIKEN.
18.00 The DAQ was set running with the new detector included. All system checks passed apart from nnaida19 ADC calibration.
Pulser peak widths are mostly ~70-90ch for all FEEs. This is similar to Tuesday for the n-side FEEs (att. 2-4) and an improvement for the p-side FEEs (att. 5-7).
Having said that, some spectra show peaks with shoulders or tails and a few feature multiple discreet peaks.
We will look at this over the next couple of days, depending on when the final move/alignment of AIDA+BRIKEN is completed.

CG, OH | Tuesday 21 March - AIDA checks | 10.00 Powered system on and biased.
Bias voltages and leakage currents ok (see att. 1). Ambient temp @23.1oC.
14.00 Shunji wanted to do some checks with the LN2 fill.
Seems to perhaps be a problem with unshielded cables to the valve switches.
With control box, outlet valve and cables to all valves behind LN2 tank, AIDA survives LN2 fill.
Parts ordered to facilitate moving of components behind the LN2 tank, away from AIDA.
Will carry out further tests once these have been fitted.
17.00 FWHM seem reasonable and similar to Dec 2016.
n-side FEEs see average pulser FWHM of ~70-80ch. nnaida19 noticeably worse @ ~150ch. (att. 2+3)
p-side FEEs worse with average pulser FWHM of ~200ch. nnaida13 worst of these, showing non-Gaussian peaks
with widths @ ~300ch. (att. 4+5)
Will not attempt to solve this now as they must all be disconnected to sort problem with nnaida1. |

OH | T9 Test Bench | T9 test setup at Daresbury was powered up and noise levels were checked using a pulser peak.
A 1V peak was used. For most channels this corresponded to a peak position at around +-11000 from the zero point at 9000.
An example of this is shown in attachment 1 showing the peak in nnaider 11, ASIC 4, ADC 11.
It was also observed that for both nnaider 11 and 12 (FEE modules corresponding to negative signals) that channels 2, 56 and 59 were not contributing to the rate. See attachment 2.
Upon investigating the missing channels ADC spectra the only apparent issue appeared in nnaida 11 ASIC 4, ADC 8. Which is plot 4.7.L. Here we see the peak much higher coming in at around channel 63000. See attachment 3.
The remaining missing channels in the rate plot appear to have normal amplitudes with maybe slightly higher noise. FWHM of ~60 as oppposed to ~18. Discussed more below.
Also done was a noise measurement across the all the ASICs. To do this an ADC was chosen belonging to each of the ASICs and the pulser peak location and FWHM was recorded. The reaults are as shown below.
FEE# ASIC/ADC Centroid Location FWHM
11 1.8 42951 19.38
11 2.8 41012 17.48
11 3.8 41929 20.01

12 3.8 42669 18.30
12 4.8 41811 15.21
13 1.8 24329 15.05
13 2.8 24034 13.64
13 3.8 24209 15.79
13 4.8 24607 13.29
14 1.8 24650 16.19
14 2.8 24618 14.12
14 3.8 23934 15.04
14 4.8 22584 14.36
14 4.8 22584 14.36
It was seen that the noise was fairly low which is to be expected as there were no dtectors connected and only a short length of kapton cables connected to the board. |
