 Tues 15/12/15

Swapped previously tripped detector (3131-11) on to kaptons already in place for (working) 2977-15 and attempted to bias

   - i.e. made no changes (FEEs, or jumpers etc) to the known working setup of 2977-15, just replaced the detector with 3131-11

   > still trips at ~6-7V

   > conclusion: He's dead Jim.

Took some measurements of rough max positions of DSSSDs from the FEEs with the current 90cm kaptons (pictures in attached PowerPoint and PDF)

   - Vertical EURIKA support to centre of EURIKA ~ 60cm

   - AIDA Cu cooling pipe to end of snout ~ 75cm

   - Base of snout to end =  57cm

   - Min distance from end of snout to inner most FEE (horizontal FEEs) ~ 92cm

           - additional 6cm per extra adapter

   - Further DSSSD can go from base of snout ~ 54cm (60cm from Cu pipe)

           - limiting factor is kaptons to nnaida5+6 (bottom stack). Still a few more cm slack in the other kaptons.

   - For kaptons in 4th horizontal connector (furthest slot in 2nd adapter), detector 48cm from base of snout.

   - For kaptons in 8th horizontal connector (furthest slot in 4th adapter), detector 36cm from base of snout.

Note (PCS): In disconnecting things to check ground connections, and when putting AIDA away before I left, I noticed ~20% of the network cables are of the shielded variety. I know this didn't seem to make any difference in the setup at DL, but I don't know how concerned you are about this and if you would suggest changing them in future.

I would recommend changing the network cables for unshielded versions to remove a potential ground connection.

  47   Mon Feb 23 11:10:44 2015 TDOutline test plan - RIKEN - Feb 2015
With the exception of one AIDA FEE64 PSU configuration test (5) and the upgrades
of the AIDA FEE64 firmware (8) and MIDAS DAQ software (9) we have now completed all
of tasks described in the outline plan.
Attachment 1: RIKEN_test_-_Feb_2015.txt
Outline test plan - RIKEN - Feb 2015

1) Move Julabo FL006 recirculating chiller (plus ac mains transformer)
and AIDA assembly stand into position.

   Consult Shunji Nishimura
If we move equipment for the test, do we have to move it back before we leave?

2) Check 3-phase connection to ac mains transformer. Check chiller POST.

TD - upload images from April/May 2014 to Elog

3) Re-connect Julabo FL006 recirculating chiller to AIDA assembly.
Inspect coolant loop. Check coolant levels. Start chiller.
Inspect for leaks. Check coolant levels.

4) Replace faulty USB-controlled ac mains switch. Test operation with
   FEE modules disconnected.

5) Connect 8x FEE modules to ?x FEE PSUs.

   PCS - default initial configuration?

6) Check MACB cabling. Power up 8x FEE modules.

7) Check setup & configuration (ASICs, FEE64).
Default ASIC parameters (tau = 2us). Waveforms off.

8) Test FEE64 performannce with pulser and no input load.
Expect pulser peak width < 15 ch FWHM.

*** Status quo ante re-established ***

Test 1

1) Install 1x MSL type BB18-1000 DSSSD with 3x modified 0.9m Kapton PCBs
plus 1x unmodified 0.9m Kapton PCB. Install 207Bi source.

2) Bias DSSSD using Silena 7710 Quad Bias Supply (ground referenced bias)
and confirm stability problems observed April/may 2014 are still present.

Test 2

1) Bias DSSSD using CAEN N1419B (floating bias) and confirm stability problems
improve. Assess impact of preAmp reference setting - if possible, proceed
   with default setting.

2) Test FEE64 performance with pulser.
Expectation pulser peak width < 120-150 ch FWHM.

Test 3

1) Adjust FEE64 PSU voltage levels per procedure described by PCS.

2) Test FEE64 performance with pulser. Compare to previous test.

Test 4

1) Attach heavy-duty grounding cable between FEE adaptor PCBs.

2) Test FEE64 performance with pulser. Compare to previous tests.

Test 5

1) Re-configure FEE PSU cabling per PCS request(s)

2) Test FEE64 performance with pulser. Compare to previous tests.

Test 6

1) Re-assess impact of preAmp reference setting.

Test 7

1) With optimum configuration obtain and analyse data files with pulser
   and 207Bi data.

Test 8

1) Update FEE firmware. Repeat test 7.

Test 9

1) Update MIDAS software. Repeat test 7.

Run 41_2 seems to show mostly noise (anti correlation) and here we see real ions (positive correlation.  This is confirmed in our figure 4, where the statistics of DSSD#3 seems about doubled.  The event rate per unit time in 41_2 shows a relatively flat top behavior characteristic of noise domination, where as our present one shows more jitter that could be characterized by light ion production and transport variation.

Offline analysis of AIDA R42_32.

Degrader condition of F11 is with the same stopping power of e.g. R42_7 (see https://elog.ph.ed.ac.uk/AIDA/509).
5 mm Al between MUSIC 1 and MUSIC 2
     3. + 0.2 = 3.2 mm Al on the upstream side of the PE wall
Pb wall between MUSIC 1 and MUSIC 2 was reduced from 7.5 cm gap to ~6.5 mm gap (beam right side pushed in 1
cm, so asymmetric)
     (Variable degrader system remains unchanged with 1,2,3 in: 0.5 mm W + 0.3 mm W + 1.0 mm W (+3 mm Al backings))

See attached histograms.

Figure 1: The time structure of low energy events seems more normalized with a flat-top and similar intensity as
like R41_2 (see i.e. https://elog.ph.ed.ac.uk/AIDA/507 ) rather than R42_32, though one wonders if this is a
real effect or if R42_7 was somehow unusual.

Figure 2: We can confirm that the number of real events corresponding to light ions seems reduced compared to
R42_7 Fig 4.

Figure 5: Distribution in XY of low gain [heavy ion / high energy] is still weighted to the right hand side as
usual, but seems slightly more homogeneous than previous cases such as R42_7. This is corroborated by the
scalers pasted above, where the implant rate to DSSD#3 is about 0.3 Hz rather than 0.4 Hz of R42_7; this is
probably a real decrease and not merely a statistical effect as R41_2 also shows around 0.4 Hz. I conclude that
heavy ion implant rate is reduced by about 1/3 from R42_7, most probably from the Pb bricks cutting some
fraction of the beam (though in theory it could be from shifting 5 mm of the Al degrader up stream by ~2 m and
the angular straggling of the heavy ions in the plate).

Specific comparison of the implant rates show we are dropping 0.1 cps on DSSD#2, 0.1 cps on DSSD#3, and maybe 0.05 Hz
(it's a sensible number or not different than zero?) in DSSD#4, which can give an idea of what ion species are being
cut out if we looked at the BigRIPS PID correlated with AIDA implantation.

S O R T S T O P P E D ..... Tue Nov 29 14:18:07 2016

Spectrum s400 displays the frequency of bits 0-47 of the (MBS) 25MHz correlation scaler.

For those bits which can be expected to cycle often within the sampling period we would
expect to observe each bit with equal probability and this is observed for bits 0-31.
Conclude there is no evidence for hardware/firmware problems with the AIDA 25MHz correlation
clock for bits 0-31 and therefore probably not for bits 32-47 either.

I think the SyncCheck issues observed could due to:

1) the effect of sampling data from the AIDA TapeServer data buffers,
2) arithmetic/coding bug in the SyncCheck code
... or ?

I don't recall observing these issues before ... does that mean we weren't looking? ... or
that there has been some change to hardware operation, software ... ?

Note LEC E_p versus E_n spectra changed from (10keV/channel)

          CALL inc2d( 2020, INT( 0.07 * idata( i ) + 0.5 ),
     + INT( 0.07 * idata( j ) + 0.5 ) )

to (3.5MeV/channel)

          CALL inc2d( 2020, INT( 0.01 * idata( i ) + 0.5 ),
     + INT( 0.01 * idata( j ) + 0.5 ) )

We conclude that the high energy heavy-ions of interest are largely above the
HEC 200MeV (nominal) threshold.

Attachment 2 - implant energy for stopping DSSSD layer (20MeV/channel)

Attachments 3-4 - per pixel implant-decay correlation times (163.84us/ch)

The 130Ag data (yellow) clearly shows the "20ms bump" but the later test data (red & blue)
with the revised AIDA FEE64 adaptor PCBs *and* using ASIC setting I_bias LF feedback 0x8 -> 0xf
for all p+n FEE64s shows (with the limited statistics available) no evidence of a "20ms bump".

Offline analysis of the AIDA Oct17/R17_31 to R17_34 data "84Ge setting"
compared to an equivalent analysis of the AIDA RIBF128/R5_124 to R5_148
data from the 130Ag setting of the June 2017 RIBF128 experiment.

N.B.
1) no software thresholds
2) no PID correlation
3) unless otherwise stated, all implant energies are the stopping layer implant energies

Attachment 1 - implantation energy (20MeV/ch, range 20.48GeV)
               versus
per pixel implant-decay correlation time (163.84us/ch, range 16.78ms)

The 130Ag data (lower) clearly shows the "20ms bump", there is no
evidence for a "20ms bump" in the "84Ge" data (upper).

Note the non-observation of the "20ms bump" in the "84Ge" data
is not explained by the larger range of implant energies of the
               130Ag data ( see attachment 7 )

Attachments 2-3 - per pixel implant-decay times (163.84us/ch)
