Sat Nov 11 00:01:41 2017, Daid. Mirco, Trigger and scalars for 4.0 MeV/u
|
Tom et al. tuned the trigger this evening, before we began the runs. (Run 82, or Run 83??)
===TRIGGER===
Trigger condition is: E OR HI/ds
We count the CAMAC OR signals as follows: A,B
A: Which CAMAC module? Left to right, 1,2,3,4,5
B: Which module channel? This is the number engraved on the module by the LEMO output.
==E Definition==
All p-n sides of E detector:
RAL 109 discrim cable numbers: 4, 5, 7
=> Corresponds to CAMAC OR Numbers 2,2; 2,1; 3,1, respectively.
==HI/ds Definition==
All p-n sides of HI detector: 8, 9, 11
RAL 109 discrim cable numbers
=> Corresponds to CAMAC OR Numbers 4,3; 4,2; 5,3, respectively.
ds=Downscale; ds factor is 8 = 2^8 = 256
===SCALARS===
0: Ungated
1: Gated
2: dE (n-n) [Cable 3]
3: E (n-n) [Cable 6]
4: HI (n-n) [Cable 10]
5: Pulser
6: Clock
===DISCUSSION===
The n-n side of the E detector seems to be noisier than the p-n side. Thus the p-n side is used for the trigger logic, whilst the n-n side is used for the scalar.
However, there seems to be something confusing about using the p-n side for the true trigger but the n-n side for the scalars. It means we cannot compare the scalars self-
consistently to each other. That is, the gated or ungated signals do not have a strong correlation with the individual detector scalars. In principle if we have enough LEMO
cables and Fan In/Fan Out modules, we should simply propagate the p-n signals to both the trigger (when relevant, i.e. E detector) and the scalars alike. For now we don't
touch anything, though. |

NB: This list may be incomplete!
CERN side:
Beam operators hope for a FC which can be automated at the end of SEC: Olof ?
Gain resistors (and other items) sent to CERN. Where are they? KJ has them? Check with Karl

Daid. Need to register the device to CERN
Dry N2 bottle: ask Karl
Edinburgh side:
Iris automated controls and mounts: in construction. Add additional stop so doesnt close all the way. Peter
Cooling line chamber feed through: get spare. Peter
Get Al degrader foil for heavy ions (~13 um), mount on dummy frame etc. probably fine from store. Should get 15

Alpha spectral analysis: to be sorted. Daid, Claudia, Tom, Ruchi
Sort routines for dE-E plots, etc, for online analysis: Tom
Photo diodes x2 along with degrader foil: PCB for photodeiodes, PCB for photodiodes. extra holes for ladder. Peter
Target ladder config finalization: 2 photodiodes, collimator (what size, we have 3 mm and 10mm), Beam viewer,
We need to verify how many positions we have. Need at least 2 CH2 and 1 Carbon. Daid, Claudia
Extra ribbon cables are needed? need to check with calibration. Also need long ribbon cables
Beam viewer: see target ladder
Faraday cup SHV to SMA converter: Peter
Window port for front of chamber? Peter
Photographs and diagrams of experimental setup -- organized clearly for beam operators during tuning: add
technical drawing on elog.
Alignment -- 2 end caps and one target ladder mount for optics reflector (8 mm diameter?) For survey people. Peter
Adjustable feet to be produced for radial alignment: Peter / Toby
Contact CERN about date for beam connection: As soon as possible after 20th October. Talk to Karl/Olof.
Collimator at exit of SEC ? needs to be aligned. Ask what the other beamlines do - does olof have collimator
ahead of his chamber
Calibration of Target ladder positions. Peter / Daid
Email to Karl & Olof about:
- FC after SEC
- Parcel of gain resistors
- date for connection of SEC to our chamber
- collimator in front of chamber ?

How to protect the S2s during beam tuning?
Can the ISOLDE operators easily restore beam optics settings or not?
(Determines if we can do all the beam tuning at once or if we have to separate them)
Controlable iris aka Star Wars door -- contact Simon Fox at York
Dynamic range of the preamps is only maximum 200 MeV, so we need a foil to degrade the heavy ion energy

For posterity
==========
Hi Ruchi,
Could you ask a friend for me to make a measurement with a ruler? I
attach a PDF you may send along. It shows a basic picture of the blue
chamber stand, a picture of the broken part, and an arrow with what I
need to know. Second page of PDF shows what kind of signage should be
on the items of interest.
The steel wheel mounts have two bolts which connect them to the
struts. We want to know the spacing between the *center* of one bolt
to the second bolt, so that we know the spacing to drill into the new
struts. There are 4 such steel wheel mounts, two on a pair of struts.
My guess is the value is something around 12 cm give or take. But I
need a precise value and I forgot to measure it in August.
The chamber stand is located to the beam left of XT01 (Miniball) in
ISOLDE hall, or it was ...
Cheers,
daid |
