patrick Coleman-Smith | Power supply changes and blowing fuses ! | Reading about the power supply changes and the requirement to replace fuses leads me to be concerned.
I think the power being changed is the AC input to the FEE64 power supplies.

laura | How to monitor and check synchronisation of FEES | Alfredo has written a program to check the synchronisation of the FEES, which need to be checked regularly
To do this:
change to directory: npg/AIDAanalysis/AIDAmonitor
Command: nice ./AIDA-sort.exe -F filename e.g. nice ./AIDA-sort.exe -F AIDA37_10
Be patient, it takes a while to sort the file. It is possible to monitor the output in the directory npg/AIDAanalysis/ORDERsort/aev by the command ls -trlh /data10/NP1512.rootfiles
However, there is no need to wait for the raw date in the full 2GB to be converted to .root. It is possible to pause it by pressing the space bar, then choosing the options (0 to stop)
Once stopped, command: nice root -l /data10/NP1512.rootfiles/aida_sort_AIDAfilename.root e.g. nice root -l /data10/NP1512.rootfiles/aida_sort_AIDA37_10.root
Root will then open.
Command: .x checkSYNC.c
--------------------------------
Four canvases will open: (1) cxy for each DSSD, (2) cExy for each DSSD, (c) cpulser: timestamp vs NNAIDA module and (d) CADC Energy: ADC energy vs NNAIDA module
* Check in cxy that all 4 quadrants have data (excluding those corresponding to nnaida19, which is currently inactive). If there is asymmetry (eg missing quadrants) there is probably a synchronisation problem!!
*Check in cEXY that there is a y=x correlation. If it isn't, there is probably a synchronisation problem!!
If there is a synchronisation problem, it may be necessary to power cycle. Switch all off, then sequence all on, follow AIDA elog entry 242 https://elog.ph.ed.ac.uk/AIDA/242

VP | RPI | replace RPI with model B+. 4 USB ports + 4 port switch
The RPI system has been replaced by a model B+ which has 4 internal USB ports
Connects to:
AIDA Power Control USB1
Serial port to FEE for console output USB0
CAEN N1419 HV power supply USB2
All 3 connections use a USB => RS232 convert chip. The hardware cannot simply tell these apart. The USB ports assigned should however remain constant as long as the connections remain the same.
Power up RPI system.
At end of boot check the last couple of lines on the console for the assigned IP address. Should be 10.1.1.114.
login using ID npg Password is the same as for the data acq system.
then type startx
When the graphical console appears.
Firstly click on the icon TclHttpd Server to start the web server.
Start the web browser (Icon immediately to the right of the MENU icon at extreme left of the top row).
Connect to http://localhost:8015/AIDA/Rly16/Rly16.tml (the browser will have this in its recently used list)
The software now checks the potential USB devices for one which responds correctly to a request for the firmware in the AIDA Power Control box.
The GUI shows the port in use. Currently it is /dev/ttyUSB1
Even if the hardware changes the software should find the correct port to use but this suggests the other uses will also have changed (you may need to use dmesg to locate which ports are assigned)
You can use the icon PuTTY Client to start the putty program.
connect and open for USB0 to monitor the FEE64 console
connect and open for USB2 to control the CAEN N1419
You can connect from a remote terminal using ssh -X -l npg nnrpi1
However to start putty from the command line you will need
sudo chmod 660 /dev/ttyUSB0; putty (for the FEE console)
or
sudo chmod 660 /dev/ttyUSB2; putty (for the N1419 control)

VFEP & TD | [How To] Remote control of CAEN N1419 Programmable HV Power Supply |
@ CAEN N1419
Set programmable parameters - see CAEN N1419 manual p.16 (attachment 1)
INTERLOCK = CLOSED
CONTROL = REMOTE
Set front panel switches HV on/off/kill = ON
No interlock jumpers
@ AIDA server
From a command terminal, login to nnrpi1 using ssh, set device permissions, and launch putty.
ssh -X nnrpi1 -l npg
password:
:
:
:
% sudo chmod 777 /dev/ttyUSB2
% putty &
From the putty window sequentially select 'USB2', 'load' and 'open' - this will select
and load a saved serial session for device /dev/ttyUSB2 and launch a command terminal
for the serial session.
Enter the command 'caen' followed by return. Note the command is not echoed.
The CAEN HV interface should appear. Enter the command 'd' to display/modify parameters.
See CAEN N1419 manual pp.27-29 for further commands. See attachment 2.
N.B. The above procedure assumes:
/dev/ttyUSB0 = USB-controlled ac mains switch (device pl2303)
/dev/ttyUSB1 = serial link to FEE64 system console (device FT232RL)
/dev/ttyUSB2 = CAEN N1419 (device FT232BM)
However, these assignments may vary. You can use the command dmesg to check assignments.
For example,
% dmesg | grep usb

VFEP & TD | How to fix DAQ stalls at GO | It has been observed that when starting the AIDA data acquisition (select 'GO' from the 'Data Acquisition Run
Control' window) that from time to time one, or possibly more, FEE64 modules fail to begin producing data.
Once running they appear to be totally reliable.
The result is that these FEE64 modules produce no AIDA SYNC data items or ASIC Events - they may still
produce WAVE SYNC and Wave Events.
The best check to make after starting the AIDA data acquisition is to select 'Data Acquisition Statistics'
from the 'Data Acquisition Run Control' window. In the 'Data Acquisition Statistics' window check that
'Show ALL Data Acquisition Servers?' is selected. From the 'Select counter to monitor' menu select
'AIDA SYNC' and select 'Update Once' to update the counters and rates.
Check that all FEE64 modules show a rate of ~1500/s.
If you see 0 then that module has failed to start.
The recommended procedure is:
1) Make a note of the FEE64 module which is not producing AIDA SYNCs.
2) Go to the 'Merge Control' window and select 'Reload'.
The status banner should show
'Merge State = GOing : merging : xfer enabled : waiting for SYNC'
Select 'Toggle Merge Program Pause State'. The status banner should show
'Merge State = GOing : paused : xfer enabled : waiting for SYNC'
In this state the Merge software will read data from all links but discard the data and make no attempt
to time align the data streams which is impossible if one, or more, streams is not producing AIDA SYNC
data items.
3) Return to the 'Data Acquisition Run Control' window
Deselect 'Act on ALL Data Acquisition Servers?'
Select the FEE64 module which is not producing AIDA SYNC data items from the 'Acquisition Servers' menu.
From the 'System functions (Only use if you know what they do!!!)' menu select 'Go Electronics'.
This will reset and restart the electronics for this FEE64 module without changing any setting.
If you now check the 'Run Control Data Acquisition Statistics' window, hopefully you will see
that the FEE64 module is now producing AIDA SYNC data items.
4) If so, return to the Merge Control window.
Select 'Toggle Merge Program Pause State' and the status should change from 'paused' to 'merging'.
After a few second you will hopefully observe the Merge software begin to time align the data streams
and start producing a merged, time-ordered data stream. |

In no particular order of priority:
1) Vary ASIC V_DD=3.3V within +/-10% operating range
2) Use 'clean' floating high voltage detector bias
- check polarity
- is there a difference between detector local
ground on p+n junction or n+n ohmic sides of DSSSD?
- common or isolated detector local ground for multiple DSSSDs?
- RFQ submitted for 1x CAEN N1419
- additional filtering for Emco Q05-5?
- other?
3) Backtrack changes to date
- Kapton PCB mods
- PSU set points
- Standard FEE64 PSUs -> linearly regulated PSUs
4) Evaluate effect of ASIC parameters 'Ibias preamp SF' and 'Ibias preamp' on noise
5) Evaluate effect of ASIC parameter 'preAmp reference' on stability of positive and
negative input configurations

ASIC parameters
Default ASIC parameters (EXPERIMENT/AIDA/2014Aug13-13.44.58) except
- shaping time 2us
- slow comparator 64 (hex 40)
- nnaida11 & nnaida12 preAmp reference 0x30 -> 0x38
which will reduce linear output range but significantly stabilises
negative polarity input ASICs
Typical pulser peak widths for nnaida11, 12, 13 and 14 c. 130-150ch FWHM.
Without the copper braid connecting the two adaptor PCBs the peak widths
are typically 200-250ch FWHM.
The problem observed last week (leakage current > 20uA, bias c. 3V, i.e. an
apparent 150k short) was found to be due to a fault on the n+n side FEE Adaptor
PCB rev 290114. Specifically the left hand connector was faulty. The exact
nature of the fault has not yet been determined but will be investigated.
For time being the rev 290114 PCB has been replaced by a rev 180713 PCB
with a 2-way IDC connector from the HV cable (core) to LK1. |
