Claudia | Meeting Edinburgh 14 March 10 am 2017 | 1) DAQ
We have 192 channels to DAQ working. Mirco will test the silicon detectors with an alpha source in the next 2 weeks.
2) Vacuum
In the moment we reach 6E-6. There are still 2 tiny leaks. There will be an extra turbo for the upstream beam line which should improve the vacuum for ISOLDE purposes.
We need to check how fast we can pump down as might need to open the chamber between tuning and beam time (detectors need to be protected from tune beam).
3) Alignment
Alignment of the sample positions can be done here (Mirco/Peter). Claudia will contact Karl about a survey team for alignment at ISOLDE. Then we can talk to them directly.
4) Shipping
We aim to ship the setup to CERN by the end of March. We will try to go over to CERN for initial setup middle of April (to be confirmed with Karl)
5) Equipment needed from CERN
Claudia will ask Karl about availability of a CAMAC crate and 2 NIM bins.
6) Safety
Peter will order safety boots and hard hats.
Those who do not have ISOLDE access need to attend the ISOLDE radiation protection course.
7) Availability for Preparations
Tom not here: 25 March - 3 April, 25 April - middle June
Daid not here: until middle June ?
8) Samples CH2, CD2
Paul has new batch and should send alpha spectra soon. |

DK | Measuring foil thickness | A couple scans from my notes which may be useful.
One discusses alpha energy loss in nominal kitchen foil (~12 um) and also introduces my technique to calibrate a thin (~20 um) SSD. Sorry I forget which student's thesis it's from, either Sakaguchi of CNS Tokyo or perhaps Dahee Kim of
Ewha. They both did alpha measurements in 2015 as memory serves. It shows we could measure the thickness of the 12.5 um Al foil from Goodfellow with a standard source.
The second is just an email to a colleague about how I went about measuring some foils by weight. In that case, I want to get an idea on "how much aluminium might be evaporated on the mylar" and I got, I believe, a pretty sensible
answer. Of course, I *assumed* that the mylar was the nominal value. |

daid | Julabo chiller operation | This log entry contains a basic instruction on how to operate the Julabo liquid flow chiller.
There are 5 buttons (left to right): Up/Down, Enter, 1/0.
To toggle power to the device, use 1/0 (on/off). NB: This only turns the electronics on, and does not initiate circulation / cooling.
When switched on, it will display sequentially some basic information sequentially. One may generally ignore these, and wait until it displays the current temperature.
To adjust or check the set point, tap either of Up/Down. To change the set point, press and hold either up or down. Release the button when the desired set point is reached,
and tap up/down to do the fine tuning.
Once the desired set point is entered, the display will return to the current temperature reading.
To turn on circulation / chilling, press and hold Enter (the down/left facing arrow). One needs to hold this button several seconds. It is obvious when it begins to operate, as
it will make more sounds, and additionally the Snowflake LED indicator should turn on (unless the current temperature is lower than the set point, it may simply flash briefly).
The set point can be adjusted while the circulation / chilling is on, as above.
To turn the circulation / chilling off, hold down Enter again for several seconds.
Best to raise the set point to ~20 degrees and wait for it to reach the value, before turning off circulation, and finally the device (0 button). |

DK | Issues and problems encountered | Objective log on perceived issues. (As a benchmark, I enumerated 17 such issues on my previous RIB experiment March 2017.)
In no particular order...
1) Sun PC:
Cannot properly connect to internet, disallowing SSH access
Important for external monitoring
Better to control DAQ from ISOLDE data room in case of ISOLDE issues
Connecting to CERN network screwed with DNS, borking local DNS hence DAQ
Double mouse clicking often skipped run numbers
2) Vacuum:
Barely acceptable, and manual gate valve leaked!
Keep in mind, interlock system showed higher than true values
44Ti requires a gas cell and vacuum load may increase considerably
(Chamber needs gas-feedthrough lines and gas-flow control system)
Cooling lines are known to leak badly
3) SSDs:
HI detector leak current increased considerably during the run
Noisy n-n sides
To be discussed
4) Scalers
Scalers were made with noisy n-n sides, making interpretation confusing
We lacked LEMO cables to provided summed p-n scalers
5) Decay halflife
A simple handheld monitor turned out to be effective for 59Cu
That won't work for 44Ti ...
6) Unused aparatus should be minimized
(Time & money)
Photodiodes
ZnS screen / camera
Manual gate valve (see above)
7) Shift plan/schedule
No definitive plan -- need pre exp. meeting
Shift schedule became arbitrary, w/ several flip/flops
RP requirements limited access to chamber
8) Shift work
Run log was made with short notice
Style may not be ideal for data analyst
Copy/paste errors et al were observed
Deadtime log was suggested to be added
(Other issues might be circumvented w/ SSH access to Sun PC)
9) Purpose
Detail & motivation of exp. was not clear to all members
10) Faraday Cup
Data taken by TIMBER system, which is better to integrate w/ our DAQ
Strange non-physical fluctuations which we like ISOLDE team to resolve
Timestamp differences of Sun PC and TIMBER PC?
11) Silena HV module
Module was found to falsely report applied bias
12) Alpha calibration / pulser walkthrough
Lacking prior to experiment owing to manpower and technical difficulties
13) Sort codes and simulations
It was common to discuss received vs. expected data w/o fast clear answer |

SL | Investigation of E detector thickness | While changing HI degrader foil to 10um Al, the E detector was investigated, due to previously observed alpha punch-through.
On visual inspection, the E detector appeared to be 1mm in thickness, leading us to believe that instead we were not fully depleting the detector.
The bias supply was investigated, and was found to be supplying a lower voltage (on all channels) than was shown on the display (14V -> 2V in reality, 350V -> 60V in reality).
The bias module was replaced, and the faulty module marked as such.
As a result of this change, the configuration of the detector bias channels has been altered (as ch 2 on new module can't supply >100V).
-------------
New Configuration:
Detector : Voltage : Leakage Current
Ch 1 - dE : 40 V : 0.92 uA
Ch 2 - HI : 14 V : 2.52 uA
Ch 3 - E : 350 V : 3.91 uA |

DK | Gas cell check with He sniffer | Notes from an email:
Tested the chamber with the leak checker. We got 3.7 x 10^-6 mbar
liters / sec. I estimate the chamber's leak rate around 1 mbar / 4
hours or so, and I randomly guess its volume is 100 ml. If I smash
those numbers I get ~10^-5 mbar liters / sec which is a similar order.
I turned off the pumps for the weekend but left the He gas in the
cell. |
