NH | AIDA Waveforms |
Noise seemed less strong today, unsure of cause. I had re-taped snout as tape was not sticking well.
Figures 1-4: Waves for all 4 FEEs connected to the DSSD
Figures 5-8: Zoomed in on region 400-600
Figures 9-10: Rates in DSSD
Note in particular fee09 has a clear noise pickup somewhere. Also appears when no DSSD voltage.
Peak distance = 6 channels = 16.6 MHz.
Fee09 is connected to HV bias core (-160 V)
However unplugging the HV cable from it shows no difference.
Must be related to something else.
Update 16:29 CEST:
Distance is more like 5 channels (20 MHz)
Fee09 picks it by far most strongly but all fees you can make it out
Additionally can see a slower waveform especially on other fees... approximately 40 channels = 2.5 MHz
Checked with multimeter that low resistance path between FEE cooling plate and ground LEMO connector
also low resistance between ribbon cable copper shield and ground LEMO connector.
Noise seems to appear even if pulser cable unplugged at pulser end or when attentuation is increased weaking pulse.

The snout endcap has been sealed with new copper tape over the red tape
Observe significant drop in leakage current on DSSD #2 down to 7 uA (about 0.5 uA above DSSD #1) as it looked when the black cloth was on
It is possible more sealing needs to be done when bPlas is biased as bPlas is more sensitive
-
the AIDA LAN network interface is only running at 100 MBit/s - this will be problematic during the run
When 2A is free will try to reconnect cable to see if it returens to 1 Gbit/s
-
Preliminary alpha background analysis (over weekend, 90 hours statistics)
Cause of sporadic PAUSE/RESUME is not clear as rate is nearly always 0 outside of aida02/aida04

01.02.2021 - Four new sets of PSU, HDMI & Ethernet cables were ran from the DESPEC rack to the AIDA frame, in preparation for 4 new FEE64s.
A new 7 port USB hub has also been placed for the last few serial connections.
For the first experiment this year, we will run with a narrow AIDA configuration as in 2020. (12 FEEs)
The system has been powered up and biased successfully. To be monitored over the next few days.
A lot of the FEE serial monitors are missing, I think a hub has been disconnected from nnrpi1. This will be investigated on Wednesday.
The rack will also be grounded properly on Wednesday to investigate the impact on the noise.
A single new water line (feed and return) needs to be installed for the 16th FEE, this will be done once the hose is found/ordered...
The 4 new FEE64s will be mounted and powered up at some point to obtain the MAC addresses, and possibly check MIDAS merging 16 FEE64s.
Waveform data will be taken wednesday before & after grounding the rack to see noise situation currently |

05.02.2021 -
The serial hub was disconnected and was reconnected. Unfortunately nnrpi1 seems to have gone offline so cannot be used still. Will try to reboot pi when possible.
The hose has arrived and the water line will be prepared in my office mid next week.
All the leaf MACBs have been updated to the latest firmware (MACB_GSI_Simple.jed) and set to mode '0'. A fourth leaf MACB is now in the NIM crate but has no HDMI connections in or out yet.
All 12 FEEs powered up and have no WR issues (one MABC was first set to wrong mode, but was fixed)
A new tape server to support unmerged waveform readout has been loaded and documented by VP. This will largely be unused but the option is there and will be tested.
The rack was grounded to the platform floor with a large cable to potentially improve situation. Waveforms before (fig 1-2) and after (fig 3-4) attached.
There will be a DESPEC Dry Run next week Mon-Tue. |

NH, CC, HMA, MV, ZC, KZ | AIDA Snout Remounted |
AIDA and the Snout have been remounted in S4
I had a check of the AIDA connectors and all looked good, the kapton PCB connectors were sitting comfortably above the interstage and I saw no stressed/loose connectors.
Multimeter showed no continuity between snout or inter-stage and AIDA ground
We put a single layer of wide black tape inside the end-cap to improve the light seal and minimise reflections
After mounting the snout I managed to bias both DSSDs to 100 V with no issues. I had to raise the DSSD#1 (Ch0) limit to 40 uA because it rises quite high during ramp up (then settles).
It is very hot in S4 (28 C) and the roof is closed for high-radiation experiments, so I expect it to get hotter. DSSD leakage currents were similar to before (20 and 15 uA)
There is also the new Temp and Humidity monitor, which you can view on AnyDesk at 192.168.11.119 (I think), there is a firefox window open already |

NH | AIDA Rates/Situation |
The ground cable (LEMO00) in aida07 was disconnected, it has been reinserted and the waveforms now look good.
(All data below taken with thresholds 0xA for all)
Noise in aida09 is visible and aida12 is quite high too. (All of DSSD3? Except aida10?)
Event rate in them is very high. The lower frequency noise visible in figs 5,7 seems slow enough for the ASICs
DSSD#2 has nice event rate and DSSD#1 seems "OK"
Leakage currents high but S4 very warm at the moment as roof is still closed.
Some PCBs from bPlas are touching the ribbon cables, so should be insulated better.
Next S4 access later this week will reseat all connectors to ensure good connection.

TD, JB | AIDA Noise optimisation |
In the morning we reinstalled FEE64s aida06, aida13, aida07. The rails of the FEE64 boards were found to be incorrect (that of the rails that were used in CARME).
After replacing the rails on the abovementioned FEE64s we powercycled AIDA and found the following results in the histograms and statistics.
As can be seen in attachement 4, aida16 has a noisy waveform and we are going to investigate this further.
When setting the threshold to 0x64 (1 MeV) on the slow comparator threshold we saw that the low energy branch of aida04 was still noisy. (Attachment 6)
- Setting the slow comparator threshold to 0x32 (0.5 MeV) introduced noise into aida08, aida16 and substantially more noise in aida04. (Attachment 7)
- Setting the slow comparator threshold to 0x14 (0.2 MeV) introduced noise into aida11 and substantially more noise in aida04, aida08, aida16 and aida06. (Attachment 8)
- Setting the slow comparator threshold to 0xf (0.15 MeV) introduced more noise into the same aforementioned channels aida04, aida06, aida08, aida11, aida16 (additionally aida02), barring hot strips. (Attachment 9)
We covered the end of the snout with a black cloth and this reduced the noise in some of the channels (Attachment 10 and 11).
- We covered the end of the snout with two layers of aluminium foil - this produced the same result as covering the snout with the black cloth (Attachment 12, 13, 14 & 15).
We resumed after lunch.
- Replaced the aida16 adaptor PCB with a spare, and this produced a much more sensible rate and hitpattern in aida16, which could lead us to believe that the aida adapter card was faulty or misaligned. (Attachment 16, 17, 18 & 19).
- Placed two LK1 back on the n+n side of both DSSSDs on aida06 and aida02. The noise and rate did not change at all. (Attachment 20 & 21)
Pulser tests:
- The test + pulser was connected to the p+n sides (top and bottom) at 25 Hz.
- After checking the ASIC control 2 times over, the pulser seems to be ok for all p+n channels excluding aida01, aida13 and aida14. (Attachment 23)
- The pulser peak width of aida09 1.8.L was found to be c. 55 channels FWHM on uncalibrated scale which corresponds to 35 - 40 keV FWHM in energy resolution. (Attachment 24)
- After reseating the adaptor board PCBs we found the same result as before reseating the adaptor boards (Attachment 25).
- Connecting the test - pulser to the n+n side we found that most of the ASICs behaved normally which ASIC 1 in aida04 was showing abnormal behaviour. (Attachment 26, 28). The test + pulser loop is still in place.
- The pulser peak width of aida02 1.8.L was found to be c. 118 channels FWHM on uncalibrated scale which corresponds to 95 - 100 keV FWHM in energy resolution. (Attachment 27)
- We set the thresholds on the n+n side to 0xf and the p+n side to 0xa. Subsequently, we observed improved noise conditions in many of the channels. The still noisy channels are aida01, aida04, aida08. (Attachment 29, 30). This might be because we have introduced an addtional ground loop with the pusler tests, but could also mean that the ground loop that is currently being used is not sufficient or poorly implemented.
Summary:
- From the pulser test it is clear that aida14 ASICs 1&2 are not in good shape and appear to be faulty.
- We managed to improve from 1 aida module in the sub 20 kHz rate range to 6 aida modules in the sub 20 kHz rate range by the end of the tests.
- We set the slow comparator thresholds on the n+n side to 0xf and the p+n side to 0xa. Subsequently, we observed improved noise conditions in many of the channels. The still noisy channels are aida01, aida04, aida08. (Attachment 29, 30). This might be because we have introduced an additional ground loop with the pusler tests, but could also mean that the ground loop that is currently being used is not sufficient or poorly implemented.

OH, NH | AIDA Noise and grounding tests 3rd March - Results |
Grounding implemented
- Each FEE given direct connection to heavy duty earth bar via adaptor board lemo ground
- Earth bars are then connected to platform ground on AIDA frame
- Photo of grounding - attachment 1
- Improvements not as large as expected from previous experience though
- Particularly in the n+n side where widths still appear awful
- While implementing the grounding it was noticed the ground lemo socket on FEE7 was damaged and no longer gripped onto a lemo cable
- It was noted that it would need changing at some point but continued with it for the time being
- Jumper configuration was n+n LK1-4 all on, p+n LK2-4 all on

- Compared to the width with no grounding the FEEs for the first DSSD (First 6) range from no change to slightly worse
- 1.8.L spectra - attachment 3
n+n widths
- Widths still very large
- Width for 8 is around 500
- 1.8.L attachment 2

- Statistics - attachment 4
Jumper optimisation
- Went to our previously found optimal jumper configuration for the trips
- n+n LK1 only
- p+n LK 2 and 4 on all FEE
- p+n LK3 on non isolated cables (PCB ground on lower middle cable and n+n side bias on top middle cable)
- While changing the jumpers we also swapped out the damaged adaptor board on aida07 for a new one
- Saw an improvement for most FEEs

- Unfortunately saw no improvement for the n+n
- We event tested having the pulser only going into a single FEE (aida08)
- Still have a width of 622 for that FEE
- To compare FEEs we have layout 1 - attachment 5
- Layouot 1 on a common timescale - attachment 6
- Note that the rate is typically dominated by a single strip or a couple of strips within a FEE
- Many channels are just showing the pulser rate 25Hz
- p+n 1.8.L attachment 7
- p+n waveforms attachment 8
- n+n waveforms attachment 9
- Testing the noise on the n+n strips we observe noise with slow comparator set to 200 (2MeV)
- Meanwhile the p+n strips are silent at 0x64 for the most part.
- DAQ left running overnight with 0x64 on ASIC settings to see if we observe any alphas
Plan for the day
- Test daisy chaining the n+n across to the other n+n strips
- Currently the n+n braid is only plugged into either aida06 or aida08 (depending on DSSD)
- All of the jumpers are however grounded
- Will still test
- May investigate also trying this on LK3 on adaptors for aida01 and aida03
- Observe the output of the new sum inverter on the scope to check for variation in amplitude

Daily checks
- Fee temperatures ok - attachment 3
- Bias and leakage currents ok - attachment 4
- Stats spectra with current grounding - attachment 5
- Current grounding is just a cable going between each adaptor board and its respective FEE
- Interfee grounding done by power supply and also pulser circuit
- Rates for each of the asics - attachment 6
- p+n waveforms - attachment 7
- n+n waveforms - attachment 8
- Lots of noise evident on them
Plans for the day
- Connect FEEs up to the copper earth bars installed
- Powercycle and check noise levels
- If n+n remains significantly higher investigate the n+n pulser circuit further
- Investigate the effects of different jumper connetions At present n+n have all LK jumpers on and p+n have lk2-4
