Struts arrived and were installed on Wednesday. The holes on one side of each of the struts to connect the wheels to were slightly too wide (11.5 cm vs 10.5 cm).
We've taken away part of the wheel holders and now they seem to be fitting in.

205   Wed Nov 7 14:27:45 2018 CBH, DKBeam Plan for Miguel and Alberto (ISOLDE beam operators)
Presently, we are scheduled for 9 days:
Nov 26-28 are three (3) days nominally for beam development
Nov 29-Dec 4 are six (6) days nominally for physics data taking
Dec 5-6: Shutdowns and important tests are planned by ISOLDE team
Dec 7th - power gets shut off to ISOLDE

==Run Plan==
1 day for ion source and 2.8 MeV/u beam dev
1 day for High E_cm statistics, using the 2.8 MeV/u beam with 6 um Ti foil. Stop when we are happy with the number of counts we've gotten.
1 day for 1.9 MeV/u energy beam dev (for use with mid E_cm)
1.5 days for Mid E_cm statistics, using the 1.9 MeV/u beam with 3um Ti foil. Stop when we are happy with the number of counts we've gotten.
(Switch back to 2.8 MeV/u beam, takes under 1 hour)
4.5 days for Low E_cm (as long as we can), using 2.8 MeV/u beam and 12.5 um Al foil.
Time must be allocated for He runs and background Ar / empty runs. Ratios of background to reaction runs can be decided depending on the number of counts we see, and also dependent on if we need RP to change gas in the cell.

If 1.9 MeV/u proves too challenging, we may consider to switch to 2.2 MeV/u instead, TBD during machine time.

Over the weekend of 1-2 Dec we cannot change the beam (no operators) nor our target (no RP), so it is crucial we start the low E_cm run before then.

If 1.9 MeV/u beam energy is slightly different that's fine, however it would be preferable if the 2.8 MeV/u beam energy was no lower, especially for the low E_cm run.

---Total 9 days---

204   Mon Nov 5 16:26:34 2018 DK, CBHDraft run plan
Please see https://elog.ph.ed.ac.uk/ISOLDE/203 for the E_cm calculations.

Presently, we are scheduled for 9 days:
Nov 26-28 are three (3) days nominally for beam development
Nov 29-Dec 4 are six (6) days nominally for physics data taking

It is not required to use all beam dev time at the beginning of the run, and we can take data in here with a beam we like before moving on. We do, however, have to care for the fact that over the weekend of 1-2 Dec that we cannot
change the beam (no operators) nor our target (no RP).

==Tentative Run Plan==
1 day for ion source and 2.8 MeV beam dev
1 day for High E_cm statistics, using the 6 um Ti foil
1 day for lower energy beam dev (for use with mid E_cm)
1.5 days for Mid E_cm statistics
(Switch back to 2.8 MeV/u beam, takes under 1 hour)
4.5 days for Low E_cm

---Total 9 days---

==Conditions==

The High E_cm and Low E_cm can not only share the same 2.8 MeV/u beam, which is considered a fairly easy beam since this is the nominal REX energy.

The Mid E_cm requires its own beam, and we have two conditions to choose from.

=High E_cm=
  6um Ti, 2.8 MeV/u beam: Ecm=5.56-5.86 MeV
    Pro: Beam energy is 'easy'
Pro: Can share E_beam with Low E_cm

=Mid E_cm=
  2.5um HAVAR, 2.2 MeV beam: Ecm=4.76-5.06 MeV
Pro: Beam energy was delivered previously in 2012
Con: Physics protons show up below the elastic ones

  3um Ti, 1.88 MeV/u beam: Ecm=4.27-4.58 MeV
Pro: Physics protons show up above the elastic ones
Pro: We already made the gas cell
Pro: Very similar E_cm to Margerin (but different conditions)
Con: Beam energy might be difficult to achieve (but possible)

=Low E_cm=
  12.5 Al, 2.8 MeV/u beam: Ecm=3.41-3.72 MeV
Pro: We have the foil installed and tested
    Pro: Beam is 'easy'
Pro: Can share E_beam with High E_cm
203   Mon Nov 5 13:52:46 2018 CBHCoM energies for 44Ti(alpha,p) reaction for different entrance windows and beam energies

Assuming 200 Torr helium target., elastic and reaction peaks do not have signifcant overlap unless stated:

3um Ti, 1.88 MeV/u beam: Ecm=4.27-4.58 MeV

3um Ti, 2.2 MeV/u beam: Ecm=5.50-5.80 MeV

12.5 Al, 2.8 MeV/u beam: Ecm=3.41-3.72 MeV

2.5 um HAVAR, 1.88 MeV/u beam: Ecm=3.54-3.85 MeV (peaks overlap)

2.5um HAVAR, 2.2 MeV beam: Ecm=4.76-5.06 MeV

6um Ti, 2.2 MeV/u beam: Ecm=3.15-3.47 MeV

6um Ti, 2.8 MeV/u beam: Ecm=5.56-5.86 MeV

  201   Wed Oct 31 16:01:33 2018 DKMeasuring foil thickness
A couple scans from my notes which may be useful.

One discusses alpha energy loss in nominal kitchen foil (~12 um) and also introduces my technique to calibrate a thin (~20 um) SSD. Sorry I forget which student's thesis it's from, either Sakaguchi of CNS Tokyo or perhaps Dahee Kim of
Ewha. They both did alpha measurements in 2015 as memory serves. It shows we could measure the thickness of the 12.5 um Al foil from Goodfellow with a standard source.

The second is just an email to a colleague about how I went about measuring some foils by weight. In that case, I want to get an idea on "how much aluminium might be evaporated on the mylar" and I got, I believe, a pretty sensible
answer. Of course, I *assumed* that the mylar was the nominal value.

ISOLDE 44Ti meeting notes
19 Jul 2018

==To be ordered==

*Entrance window foils, TBD
  6um Ti from Goodfellow?

*Gas bottles at CERN - Helium and (likely) Argon.
ISOLDE might provide them, but they never did for N2 gas
Gas bottle will need a regulator (new or old one)

*Spanners to help repair water chiller leak.
We need the right imperial size (x2) for Swagelok.
Sizes? Email says 2x 9/16" but let's confirm

*High precision balance
No new updates. Do we really need it?

==To be repaired / replaced==

*Manual gate valve between SEC and Edinburgh chamber
Responsible: Peter, Daid, CERN Vacuum Team ...

The old one had a leak, likely from the O-ring
(Automated fast-acting gate valve could be required)
At some point, we may have to decide w/o input
Path of least resistance: fix existing one

(The old manual one should be around Peter's office...what's the beam pipe size?)

*Silena 7100 Quad Bias supply showed false readings during 59Cu exp.
  Responsible: Daid, ...

Not yet repaired, Peter searches for manual
Alternative module was found and tagged for our use, needs testing

*ORTEC 474 TFA was returned to Edinburgh, owing to 10 V baseline shift
  Responsible: Daid, ...

Useful for photodiode trigger. Take replacement back to CERN.

  Tagged for repair.
Alternative module was found and tagged for our use, needs testing

*Teflon chamber feet stands
  Responsible: Toby Fu

The original foot engraving diameter was too small, by mistake. The chamber could be shifted after alignment
But what are the design specifications?

EMAIL Mirco TO PICK THEM UP FOR US FROM ISOLDE

==Decisions==

*How shall we integrate the beam intensity delivered to target?
Gold foil w/ back-scattering to photodiode?
Needs foil, mounts for foil & photodiode. Other parts prepared.
Alpha scattering in SSDs is another option

*Photodiode degrader foil for isobaric check
  Which Al foil(s) are prepared?
    In Edinburgh or CERN?
What thickness is sufficient for 44Sc / 44Ti separation?

*Gas cell entrance window material / thickness

==Work==

*Decide beam energies
  Responsible: Conor, Alex, Daid

  1.2, 1.55, 1.88, 2.2 and 2.8 MeV/u were stated as available

*Model effect of beam spot size.
  Responsible: Conor

~3 mm FWHM was achieved for 59Cu

*Gas cell
  Responsible: Katie, Conor

Vacuum system is set up in Edinburgh, and He gas is available
He gas bottle needs a mounting support prior to use.
    Everything is in Physics Stores
We can continue to investigate true leak rate, gas cell handling, assembly

Gas cell eventually needs to go to CERN.
Are we satisfied with the setup, or shall we get new parts?
     (e.g. several new valves, ...)

*Chamber alignment
  Responsible: Peter Black

Chamber is currently disconnected from the beam line.
Previously, we contacted the survey team to come assist.

*DAQ PC has any further issues to get on the network?
  Responsible: Tom Davinson

(If PC is turned on, contact Ruchi as she would like some data.)

ISOLDE 44Ti meeting notes
28 Aug 2018

==To be ordered==

*Entrance window foils, TBD
3um Ti from Goodfellow? Is it light-tight?

*Gas bottles at CERN - Helium and (likely) Argon.
ISOLDE might provide them, but they never did for N2 gas
Gas bottle will need a regulator (new or old one)

*Spanners to help repair water chiller leak.
  *FIRST CHECK VACUUM, CHILLER!*
NB: Might damage piping during re-assembly
We need the right imperial size (x2) for Swagelok.
Sizes? Email says 2x 9/16" but let's confirm

*High precision balance -- no need to buy
We are welcome to use the one in the chem lab on 2nd floor
Just wear a lab coat, and don't move other people's stuff

*PPE (Safety)
Boots and hardhats for new members

==To be repaired / replaced==

*Manual gate valve between SEC and Edinburgh chamber
Responsible: Peter, Daid, Conor, Katie, ...

The old one had a leak, we don't know where
It's on top of Peter's PC in his office

Students can test in Edinburgh...once leak is identified:
Fix ourselves or send to Lesker?

*Silena 7100 Quad Bias supply showed false readings during 59Cu exp.
  Responsible: Daid, ...

Not yet repaired, Peter searches for manual
Alternative module was found and tagged for our use, needs testing

*ORTEC 474 TFA was returned to Edinburgh, owing to 10 V baseline shift
  Responsible: Daid, ...

Useful for photodiode trigger. Take replacement back to CERN.

  Tagged for repair.
Alternative module was found and tagged for our use, needs testing

*Take additional Pre-amp to CERN for Photodiode?
There are several in the Miniball cupboard...

*Teflon chamber feet stands
  Responsible: Toby, Mirco, Daid

The original foot engraving diameter was too small, by mistake.
But what are the design specifications?

(Mirco picked these up for us, so they are in Germany?)

*Chamber stand wheel struts
  Responsible: Peter, Daid, ...

Original ones are damaged at the ends, and also too long

Maria suggested 120 cm. We measured ~121 cm opening towards garage

To make less top-heavy, we can add a lower shelf and stack weight on it

==Decisions==

*How shall we integrate the beam intensity delivered to target?
Total integrated current, with efficiency-calibrated Ge detector
    Talk to Liam?
Gold foil w/ back-scattering to photodiode?
Needs foil, mounts for foil & photodiode. Other parts prepared.
Alpha scattering in SSDs is another option

*Photodiode degrader foil for isobaric check
10, 15, 20 um Al are prepared at CERN, 2 blank frames in Edinburgh
What thickness is sufficient for 44Sc / 44Ti separation?
    (...or other suspected contamination...)

*Gas cell entrance window material / thickness

*Target ladder setup
How many targets can fit & what should they be?
    3 mm collimator
    Photodiodes (takes two slots)
    Viewing screen (?)
    1 mm collimator (?)
    Blank target frame (?)

==Work==

*Determine beam energies
Responsible: Conor, Alex, Daid, Karl, Alberto, ...

  1.2, 1.55, 1.88, 2.2 and 2.8 MeV/u were stated as available

Karl mentioned the possibility of a beam test.

Previous beam was 44Ti+13. 40Ar may be a good pilot?

*Model effect of beam spot size -- still relevant?
  Responsible: Conor

~3 mm FWHM was achieved for 59Cu

*Gas cell
  Responsible: Katie, Conor

Vacuum system is set up in Edinburgh, and He gas is available
He gas bottle needs regulator, that's it.

Alignment parts are all at CERN.

194   Mon Oct 8 12:07:18 2018 DKGas cell check with He sniffer
Notes from an email:

Tested the chamber with the leak checker. We got 3.7 x 10^-6 mbar
liters / sec. I estimate the chamber's leak rate around 1 mbar / 4
hours or so, and I randomly guess its volume is 100 ml. If I smash
those numbers I get ~10^-5 mbar liters / sec which is a similar order.
I turned off the pumps for the weekend but left the He gas in the
cell.

These are used to connect the gas cell to the target ladder. We only had the one, and it would be more convenient if each gas cell has its own, to avoid swapping them back and forth.

Drawings attached.

For posterity

==========

Hi Ruchi,

Could you ask a friend for me to make a measurement with a ruler? I
attach a PDF you may send along. It shows a basic picture of the blue
chamber stand, a picture of the broken part, and an arrow with what I
need to know. Second page of PDF shows what kind of signage should be
on the items of interest.

The steel wheel mounts have two bolts which connect them to the
struts. We want to know the spacing between the *center* of one bolt
to the second bolt, so that we know the spacing to drill into the new
struts. There are 4 such steel wheel mounts, two on a pair of struts.

My guess is the value is something around 12 cm give or take. But I
need a precise value and I forgot to measure it in August.

The chamber stand is located to the beam left of XT01 (Miniball) in
ISOLDE hall, or it was ...

Cheers,
daid
