CG, AE, TD | Tues 17th Feb progress | 17/02/15
1515: Installed detector BB18 2977-7 with 3 modified kapton cables, one unmodified (in nnaida1) with 207Bi source.
Bias voltage @ -100V with leakage current -11.6uA @ ambient temp of ~20oC.
nnaida1,3,6,8 connected to detector, all with shaping time of 2us and hold time 8us.
Slow comparator thresholds around 0x18 and fast comparators 0xf (see below images).
Pulser at 50,000 with x5 attenuator @ 25Hz. Both polarities supplied via use of Ortec 433A dual sum and invert amp.
nnaida1+6 p+n side, -ve bias. nnaida3+8 n+n side, ground.
nnaida3 most well behaved, with low rate similar to that of pulser rate and no missing channels. Waveforms look good.
Pulser peak has smallest FWHM @ ~150ch, compared to 1000s of ch for the other nnaida.
For comparison, nnaida7 (not connected to detector) has peak width of ~18ch FWHM.
nnaida1,6,8 have typical pulser peak widths of the order 1000-3000ch FWHM. Peak too broad in nnaida6 to be distinguishable from noise peak.
Waveforms from nnaida3 stable and as expected. nnaida1+6 slightly more variable and noisy.
Waveforms from nnaida8 see much greater noise and variability, including rail-to-rail transitions.
Increasing the pre-amp reference from 0x30 to 0x60, removes rail-to-rail transitions, but waveforms remain just as noisy.
1650: Successfully started Merge and Tape servers, writing data to disk.
Merge terminal window shows errors regarding Sync pulse timestamp sequence errors (see attachment #18).
1900: Installed Caen N1419 floating HV bias supply.
Connected to detector via nnaida3, positively biasing n-side through core with p-side as low V reference through braid. Saw no leakage current => open circuit.
After some problem solving found reversing the bias and negatively biasing p-side worked. Possible broken bond wires delivering bias on n-side.
Connected to nnaida8 (also positive bias to n-side) and found short circuit. Saw leakage current of 200uA (trip level) @ 5V.
Changed to negative polarity bias and connected to nnaida6 and saw sensible leakage current of -11.5uA @ -100V bias.
Spectra for each module showed FWHM for the pulser peaks to be: nnaida1 ~800ch, nnaida3 ~150ch, nnaida6 ~3000ch, nnaida8 ~1200ch.
FWHM in nnaida1 reduced by ~1/3, nnaida6 shows little change, nnaida8 reduced by ~1/2. nnaida3 shows no change, but in line with what was seen at DL. (w.r.t peak widths seen last night using Selena bias supply)
nnaida3 performing much better than other three cards connected to detector, but in line with what was seen at DL. Other 3 cards very noisy.

Patrick Coleman-Smith | Trying the Liverpool HV supply | The SY1527 supply was delivered with three modules.
A cable has been made with LEMO00 connectors to connect to the detector adaptor HV inputs.
The SY1527 needed an external VGA display and ps2 keyboard. The software appears to be windows 98 based and won't boot until the bios is told to ignore drive D.
On boot the Drive A must be skipped. I will provide training when others wish to use the system
Channel 0 is being used and has been tested with a voltmeter to provide the correct voltage at the LEMO00 connections. The control seems to be reliable and trips with over current.
200 volts has been applied to the detector with a final current of 3.9uA. The ramp up/down rate is 1V/second.
The acquisition system was run with pulser OFF and reference setting of 0x30 on the two negative modules nnaida11 and 12.
The rates were 130K/sec + on both the 11 and 12.
Run down the HV and add a 'scope probe ( 10MR and 11pF ) .
Run up and the 'scope shows 20mv pk-pk mushy noise with occasional 200mV+ bursts.
The acquisition performance did not improve.
Changed the reference on 11 and 12 to 0x90 and switch on the pulser then the rate became 20K to 25K. Stat spectra show that ASIC3 and 4 on these boards are still more active than 1 & 2.
Changed the reference on 11 down to 0x40 and Stat spectrum shows ASIC 3 and 4 become more active.
Added an R/C filter at the HV iput to the adaptor board. Removed the 'scope probe. The filter is the same as used with the HV supply in a box block from PorgamRays.
No real improvement.
Changed 11 & 12 reference back to 0x90.
Waveforms in 12 seem normal.
Back to working on the VHDL changes now.

Patrick Coleman-Smith and Chris Griffin | Trial with Filtered AIDA PSU | Assembled three more of the filter boards and installed them in the AIDA PSU with the first, wired to use the switchmode power supply.
Powered up nnaida14 first and went fine. Just the boot sequence and measure the voltages for stability.
Powered up the remainder and all was well.
Setup and go..... the rates were way too high in all of them.
nnaida12 was running at 200k/sec+ most of the time.
The other three could be reduced in rate by changing the slow comp thresh as would be expected but 12 wasn't any good.
Tried:
Remove MACB HDMI.... no good
isolate psu earth from NIM crate ( put psu on foam support ) ..... no good
Checked the filter output and the sine wave reported yesterday ( nnaida2 ) was present on all voltage rails but no evidence of high frequency noise.
Set all channels to 1GeV, with Slow comp thresh of 10, and 11,13 & 14 showed roughly the same rate of 10 to 15k/sec. Peaks in the spectra were FWHM 12 at a random sample. nnaida12 would not conform.
Changed back to the bench power supply connections so Chris can continue. |

AE, VP, BM | Thursday May 12 | Continued work on beta-trigger for EURICA. However the system seems to have different noise condition than before, which
we think appeared after we changed power source for FEE's PSU (https://elog.ph.ed.ac.uk/AIDA/220). This is high frequency
noise of low amplitude, with a period of 10 usec.
The effect on the resolution measured with the pulser is not too large - thus our conclusion in elog entry 220 that noise
conditions had not changed much - but the noise does create a large trigger rate that would not allow us to set a low
trigger threshold (for MAC-B outputs from fast discriminators). The rate of singles from front or back, as well as coincidence of
front-back strips, increased by more than a factor of ten compared to previous conditions (e.g. ~200 coincidences for one ASIC
enables in each side of DSSD1, and fast threshold of 10).
Saved some data in this conditions, with a threshold of 16 for the fast discriminators (enabled in one ASIC for 8 of the
FEEs). When fast discriminator lowering threshold to 9, the system got upset and lost synchronization. Tomorrow we'll
attempt to revert to previous configuration of PSUs.
R16*gz:
DSSD HV: +100 for all.
Leakage current (uA): 4.2, 4.9, 3.7, 3.9, 4.2, 3.8, 10.7 (from Det#1 to veto)
Enabled fast discriminators in ASIC2 of DSSD1 and DSSD5 (NNAIDA#: 25, 30, 27, 32, 9, 13, 11, 16)
DSSD#1 is next to 207Bi source |

AIDA SYNC stats - see attachment 4 - stats 10.1M/381/3600 => DAQ stalled at 23.05 + 7.4h => c.06.29
System wide checks OK *except* SYNC pulses & SYNC errors - see attachments 5-8
Conclude DAQ stalling at c. 06.30/18.30 due to start of ORNL LN2 dewar refill cycle
but unrelated to either the BRIKEN-supplied 50MHz TTL clock signal to external clock
input of Master MACB or the ground connection provided by this coaxial cable.
Which implies the problem is either EMI/RFI or ac mains electrical ground.
AIDA powered by two single phase outlets from one of four sections of a single phase ac mains distribution
box with power supplied by two heavy duty (3cm dia) cables from Denkenseiki Noisecut AVR type PMN (AVR4, B3F
104V/51A). AIDA is connected to both NEMA 5-15R-style outlets of section A, LN2 refill to section D, BRIKEN
to sections B, C and D.
Ambient temperature +24.8 deg C, d.p. +4.1 deg C, RH 26.3%
15.00 DSSSD cabling drain wire attachment to AIDA adaptor PCB (FEE64 # 5 & 6) not tightly secured.
CG re-secured drain wire and this has significantly reduced 100kHz period transient noise
as observed at preamplifier outputs.
14.48 Restart DAQ (R110)
Master MACB mode 5, 50MHz TTL clock to external clock input
14.57 DAQ stalled
All system wide checks OK *except* SYNC errors - see attachment 9
ASIC clock timestamp - nnaida19 fails
N.B. SYNC pulses check OK, counters incrementing between successive tests
The latter is a problem we have seen previously but has not stopped DAQ running OK
